Petfact Sheet  Blood Profiling

WHY TEST BLOOD?
Our pets are unable to tell us as
owners and veterinarians about their
internal health.  Although we carry
out a thorough physical examination, to
check the function of internal organs,
we may suggest a "blood profile".
This is a blood test that allows quick
and accurate assessment of your pet's
general health and is usually
performed on site with our own blood
testing equipment.

We will discuss with you the need
for having a blood profile, either for
helping in diagnosis or as a pre-
surgical health check.

WHAT WE DO
We take a small sample of your pet's
blood which is put into special bottles
and transferred to our testing area
where the assessment process begins.
Many test options are available,
however, a panel of tests is selected
for your pet based on our
veterinarian's initial examination.  The
results allow our veterinarian to plan
treatments or select appropriate
anaesthetic drugs to more safely treat
each individual case.  In most cases,
the results will be available within two hours.

If the results are normal then we
continue with our scheduled
procedure.  However, if any
abnormality is detected, we will
contact you to discuss our concerns
and the options available.
