Sheet Dental Care
DENTAL DISEASE
Dental disease is one of the most
common illnesses of pets as they get
older. Caused by the build up of tartar on
the teeth, this can lead to mouth odour,
infection, inflamed gums, gum and tooth
loss. If untreated these problems can
cause loss of appetite, weight loss and
infections.
WHAT WE DO
To maintain the teeth and gums in good
condition, your pet may require a "scale
and clean" procedure. This must be
carried out under general anaesthetic.
We may recommend a
pre-anaesthetic blood test here.
Our staff will discuss this with you prior to admission.
Your pet will be admitted for the day,
admission is on the morning of that day.
Your pet must be fasted from 9pm the
night before. This is extremely important
as a full stomach may cause serious problems whilst under general
anaesthetic.
Our staff ill advise appropriate
fasting details.
ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
Pain relief medication and antibiotics are
often given to your pet before the scaling
procedure to combat any bacteria that
may get into the bloodstream during the
procedure. Further medication may be
prescribed afterwards for you to
administer at home.
To remove the tartar we use an ultrasonic
tooth scaler. We scale below the gum line
to restore the health of the gums. We
then polish your pet's teeth. The mouth is flushed
and dried. Any loose or damaged
teeth are extracted.
In most cases a dental chart will be made
to record the health of the teeth and
gums. Any areas of concern are noted.
Your pet's recovery is monitored closely
in our hospital ward.
We will advise you on home care, revisit
requirements and follow-up events
including home dental care.
It is important that any prescribed
medications be given to your pet until
the dosage is finished.
